About

The Fall Line® is a deep-dive true-crime podcast focused on missing people, unsolved homicides, and unidentified persons whose cold cases have gotten little—if any—media attention. Through narrative storytelling, primary and archival research, and expert and family interviews, The Fall Line introduces listeners to victims and survivors they’ve never heard of. . . and explores the reasons why their cases were ignored in the first place.

Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women, Children & Relatives: Carolyn DeFord, Part 3

This week, in honor of National Native American Heritage Day, we are re-releasing one of our most popular series: our three-part interview with Carolyn DeFord. In the final installment in our series covering the life of MMIW advocate and daughter of a missing person, Carolyn DeFord, we learn how the disappearance of her mother, Leona Kinsey, has shaped her current world--and work--and the crisis she sees in MMIWCR cases; disappearances and murders are undercounted, underreported, misclassified, and rarely addressed outside action groups and specific political campaigns. Carolyn, and advocates like her, are changing that. And they need your help.  Submit a case to The Fall Line: https://www.thefalllinepodcast.com/case-submissions   Written, researched, and hosted by Laurah Norton, with research assistance from Bryan Worters, Kyana Burgess, and Michaela Morrill/Interviews by Brooke Hargrove/Produced, scored, and engineered by Maura Currie/Content advisors are Brandy C. The Death of Joseph Smedley: A Heavy Weight

In the early morning hours of September 28, 2015, Joseph Smedley, who was an Indiana University student, chemistry major, and Sigma Phi fraternity brother, sent his sister, Vivanne, a strange late-night text message: she shouldn’t try to contact him—he was leaving the country. Vivanne knew something was wrong; she began a near-week long search for her brother that ended when his body was pulled from a nearby lake. A bookbag weighed down with close to 70 lbs of rock was strapped to his body. Joseph’s death was ruled a suicide, and his case was closed. Today, his sister, Vivianne, and a local Indiana podcaster, Stacy Bridavsky, are working to have his case re-examined.    Thanks again Vessi! Presenting Gone South Season 2: The Dixie Mafia

Welcome to Season Two of Gone South, the Edward R. Murrow-Award winning documentary podcast from C13Originals. Starting in the early sixties, a rag-tag confederation of traveling criminals known as The Dixie Mafia terrorized every state from Georgia to Oklahoma. Its hundreds of members, unofficially headquartered in Biloxi, Mississippi, specialized in scams, heists and murder. Their ringleader — the estranged son of a prominent Oklahoma politician — was a skilled and charismatic outlaw named Kirksey Nix. When Nix was sentenced to life in prison at Angola for a murder he committed in New Orleans, The Dixie Mafia was thought to be extinct. But fifteen years later, a sitting criminal court judge named Vincent Sherry and his wife Margaret, a mayoral candidate for the city of Biloxi, were assassinated. As the case ran cold, authorities were forced to confront a disturbing reality: the reign of Kirksey Nix and The Dixie Mafia was far from over. Gone South is a creation and production of Peabody-nominated C13Originals, a Cadence13 studio, in association with Jed and Tom Lipinski. Learn more about your ad choices. The Disappearance of Ricky Lee Franks Part 2: And Tomorrow After That

On Friday, June 7th, 1985, Nashville’s The Fan Fair, also known as “The Country Explosion” was days from its grand opening, and the city was flooded with strangers; the same afternoon, a man named Ricky Lee Franks would return to Nashville, his hometown, and see his family—briefly—before disappearing. Ricky Lee Franks had been living in a group home in Dickson, TN, and no one—not the cold-case detective now assigned to his case, or Ricky’s eldest sister, Sylvia—is quite sure how Ricky made his way back to Nashville that Friday. They also don’t know what happened afterward. . . though there have been leads that have taken investigators across state lines. That’s because years later, his family would hear startling reports of a stranger, calling himself Ricky Franks, traveling across the Southeast.  This two-part series looks at Ricky’s disappearance and Sylvia’s near-40-year-quest to find her brother.  Go to Framebridge.com and use promo code FALLLINE to save an additional 15% off your first order.   Tickets to The Raymond Green International Outreach Gala: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/a-night-of-unity-black-tie-gala-tickets-404902402987?aff=estw&utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&utm-medium=discovery&utm-source=tw&utm-term=listing   Submit a case to The Fall Line: https://www.thefalllinepodcast.com/case-submissions   Written, researched, and hosted by Laurah Norton, with research assistance from Bryan Worters, Kyana Burgess, and Michaela Morrill/Interviews by Brooke Hargrove/Produced, scored, and engineered by Maura Currie/Content advisors are Brandy C. Introducing Gone Cold Podcast — Texas True Crime

Texas a known for being tough on crime and those who commit it. Or at least the ones who get caught. There are 10s of 1000s of unsolved homicides in Texas and nearly as many open missing persons cases. Every week, Gone Cold Podcast - Texas True Crime presents in-depth accounts of unsolved murders and missing persons cases throughout the lone star state, concentrating on lesser known cases that the media has long left behind. Cases like the recently solved 1974 abduction and murder of Fort Worth High School student Carla Walker and the 1968 Massacre at Loma Alta, where the entire Arellano family was slaughtered by a depraved killer, to the 2008 Port Aransas Killing of Christopher Tiensch, a whistleblower whose choice to do the right thing might have cost him his life. This is a preview of Gone Cold's coverage of the 1994 sexual assault and murder of 16-year-old Trellis “Tree” Sykes, an all-star track and basketball player at her high school, located in the most impoverished and crime-ridden neighborhood in Houston – Sunnyside. When the perpetrator of a series of heinous and ultra-violent sexual assaults was apprehended years after Tree’s slaying, it was thought to be the break detectives needed. But the Trellis “Tree” Sykes case remains unsolved. As you’re listening, join Gone Cold's mission to bring these forgotten cases back into the public’s awareness by subscribing to Gone Cold Podcast - Texas True Crime wherever you listen to podcasts. The Disappearance of Carlos Ariel Delgado Mancha: No Report Filed

Carlos Delgado disappeared in 1997, but there’s no formal record of this fact—at least, not one his family can access. Although ICE allegedly holds that information in their internal records, there is no listing for Carlos, who was in the US on a temporary residency visa, with NamUs or any other state or county agency. And that has made tracking him, and publicizing his case, extraordinarily difficult. Add in the circumstances of Carlos’’ life, and his place among the “missing missing,” and his son Hugo and niece Sheila have had a hard road toward seeking help in publicizing his case.  Hugo’s Facebook Page for Carlos: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100011382740008   Sheiia’s Page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/DesaparecidosenTodoMexicoyCentroamerica   Go https://www.calm.com/fallline for an exclusive offer of 40% off a Calm Premium subscription! Detroit’s Unidentified Dead: Operation UNITED

Across the United States, major cities are faced with dozens, if not hundreds, of cases of unidentified decedents: Doe cases who, whether they are homicide victims or have died of other means, are people who may represent more than one of DPD’s cold cases: there are many missing-persons reports which could be resolved by matching the deceased to reports of the missing. The problem lies in a lack of readily available DNA evidence; until the mid-2000s, it was not standard procedure to retain such samples, and most major cities have cases dating back well into the 20th century. Detroit, MI is no exception--but they are unique in their solution.  In Detroit, multiple agencies, including the DPD, FBI, medical examiner, and anthropologists from across the state have joined forces as Operation UNITED (Unknown Names Identified Through Exhumation and DNA)--and case by case, they are working to re-identify each victim and return them to their loved ones.  Go https://www.calm.com/fallline for an exclusive offer of 40% off a Calm Premium subscription! True Crime Revolution: Sarah Turney Part 2

We continue our fascinating discussion on ethics in true crime with Sarah Turney, on topics ranging from leaks in the Delphi case, parasocial relationships in true crime, web sleuthing, family-member creator content, and the future she envisions for true-crime media.  Sarah Turney is the sister of Alissa Turney, an advocate, creator--host of Voices for Justice and Disappearances--and one of the fiercest voices pushing for radical change in true-crime media.  Sarah knows what needs to shift--she saw the worst of true-crime “entertainment” and media attention, and the lack of it, when her sister disappeared in 2001, and has experienced every possible situation family members and survivors face since then: insensitive headlines; misreported information; harassment; stories told thoughtlessly, or without consent, and more.  Sarah is on a mission, not just to team up with others who create what we’ve come to call ethical true crime, but to transform the entire industry for the good of the victims, families, and survivors whose stories it is built upon. In this two-part discussion, we cover some of the most current ethical issues in true crime today.  Try AG1 and get 5 travel packs and a year’s supply of Vitamin D: athleticgreens.com/FALLLINE Join 30 million fans across the globe and awaken your inner detective with June’s Journey!   Voices For Justice: https://www.voicesforjusticepodcast.com/ Disappearances: https://open.spotify.com/show/3mKEfFdAOyb9iaBcOwANir True Consequences: https://www.trueconsequences.com/ They Called Her Georgia Lee: https://twitter.com/SolveHerMurder Submit a case to The Fall Line: https://www.thefalllinepodcast.com/case-submissions   Written, researched, and hosted by Laurah Norton, with research assistance from Bryan Worters, Kyana Burgess, and Michaela Morrill/Interviews by Brooke Hargrove/Produced, scored, and engineered by Maura Currie/Line-editor Bill Bertschinger/ Content advisors are Brandy C.
