VISION2023: Identifying opportunities in volatile periods – Dan Dupont

On today’s podcast we’re featuring portfolio manager Dan Dupont’s appearance at Fidelity Canada’s Vision 2023 event that was held recently in Toronto. Since joining Fidelity in 2001 as a research analyst, Dan has gone on to manage several mandates including: Fidelity NorthStar Fund - alongside Joel Tillinghast, Morgen Peck, Sam Chamovitz and Kyle Weaver, Fidelity Canadian Large Cap Fund - a value-oriented large cap strategy, and Fidelity Global Value Long/Short Fund - a value oriented all-cap strategy that features both long and shorting opportunities. Dan speaks with host Pat Bolland today, and reflects on a number of topics including how his investment style of aggressive patience faired during 2022 and throughout his overall tenure. Also, a look at how Canadian Large Cap Fund has captured less than half of the market downside during Dan’s tenure, what kinds of opportunities he looks for when shorting companies, and how macro narratives such as inflation and monetary policy could impact his positioning. Overall, Dan is constantly looking to build a portfolio of stable companies that aren’t as impacted by unpredictable macro developments and trading at cheap valuations in relation to the sustainable free cash flow they generate. Additionally, Dan and Pat field questions from the live audience. Please note, you will hear references to a few slides displayed to the in person audience. Recorded on January 31, 2023. VISION2023: Opportunities in small-cap investing – Connor Gordon

Today we’re featuring portfolio manager Connor Gordon’s appearance at Fidelity Canada’s Vision 2023 event – held recently in Toronto. With host Pat Bolland, Connor dives into the big opportunities available in global small caps, and why investors should think about incorporating exposure to global small caps in their portfolio. In September 2022, Fidelity Canada launched a new fund: Fidelity Global Small Cap Opportunities Fund, managed by Connor and Chris Maludzinski. This fund may be new to the public, but it builds off the success of a similar institutional strategy that Connor and Chris have been managing since 2019. The fund looks for mispriced investment opportunities where the market has under-reacted to positive change or over-reacted to negative change. Connor reflects on today’s market environment and shares more details about the fund’s strategy, while also taking questions from the live audience. Recorded on January 31, 2023. Jurrien Timmer’s global macro view – January 30, 2023

Director of Global Macro, Jurrien Timmer is back on the program to provide his weekly thoughts and insights on the markets and give his breakdown of key macro themes. Jurrien states that just because the S&P broke a downtrend line, it doesn’t necessarily mean that a new uptrend is in place. Basically, this doesn’t tell us anything about whether the next bull market is underway. Jurrien says his outlook for 2023 so far is that the market will continue its post-COVID price discovery journey in a choppy, sideways fashion that will frustrate both bulls and bears alike. In this episode, Jurrien also discusses other topics including quantitative tightening, the debt ceiling and emerging markets. Recorded on January 30, 2023. The latest Bank of Canada interest rate decision – Don Drummond, Economist

The Bank of Canada has raised their benchmark interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point to 4.5% - the highest it’s been since 2007. This is the eighth consecutive interest rate hike for the Bank of Canada, but Governor Tiff Macklem signalled that it might be the last hike of the cycle. One of the most significant announcements by the Bank of Canada in their policy report is that they are confident in bringing inflation down to the target of 2% by 2024. We’re joined today by renowned economist Don Drummond to unpack if this timeline is advantageous. Also, to see what this 25-basis point rate hike means for housing, markets, consumer spending and the real economy. Don has held several senior roles at the Federal Department of Finance, including Associate Deputy Minister, where he was responsible for economic analysis, fiscal and tax policies. He later served as Senior Vice President and Chief Economist at TD Bank and is currently Fellow-in-Residence at the C.D. Howe Institute. One key takeaway today that Don shares with host Pamela Ritchie are that inflation has peaked and should continue dropping under 6% year-over-year as we get into this spring. Stay tuned for all of this and more. Recorded on January 26, 2023. At Fidelity, our mission is to build a better future for Canadian investors and help them stay ahead. Quantative strategies for scenario analysis – Stacie Ware

Fixed income markets are off to a promising start this year after facing their worst-ever year on record in 2022. Last week, the 2 and 10-year Treasury notes fell to a four-month low following weaker economic data, and now all eyes will be on the Fed’s next rate move to see how it will impact bond yields once again. So, will rates remain elevated? And what are some scenarios at play in a higher rate environment? Joining us today to discuss scenario analysis across a range of fixed income sectors in 2023 is Fidelity Quantitative Analyst, Stacie Ware. Based in Fidelity’s fixed income headquarters in Merrimack, New Hampshire, Stacie works closely with the Tactical Bond, Core and Core Plus teams on asset allocation and risk management. In speaking with host Pamela Ritchie, Stacie shares how she and the team are constantly recalibrating models as more data comes in on inflation and other macro variables and projections. They use a propitiatory risk model with 5000 simulations conditioned on the VIX, both current and forward, which shows them how various models relate to future outcomes for Fidelity fixed income portfolios. It’s been a choppy start to 2023 for U.S. equity markets, as signs of cooling inflation and slower growth has left investors wondering what’s next. And now investors have the opportunity to do just that, with the all-new Fidelity SmartHedge™ U.S. Equity Fund. Joining FidelityConnects today to introduce Fidelity SmartHedge™ U.S. Equity Fund are Portfolio Manager and Derivatives Analyst Eric Granat, and Investment Product Vice President Tim Callahan. Jurrien Timmer’s global macro view – January 23, 2023

Director of Global Macro, Jurrien Timmer joins us on the show to provide his weekly thoughts and insights on the markets. Jurrien explains how the market could be looking at a mild contraction but quickly followed by a robust recovery. He points to the inverted yield curve and what its pattern is telling us about a potential recession, and the behavior of the markets. With China set to reopen, he says it will be interesting to see how that will affect global markets and create cross currents in an otherwise negative outlook from the yield curve and by extension by earnings. Jurrien also discusses other topics including the debt ceiling, a potential recession this year, and what the earning season is telling us so far in 2023. Recorded on January 23, 2023. Jurrien Timmer’s global macro view – January 18, 2023

Jurrien Timmer, Director of Global Macro, joins us again on today’s podcast. The U.S. Federal Reserve has been working hard the last year to tame inflationary pressures while avoiding a recession; a term known as a “soft landing.” Now, after one year of seven consecutive rate hikes, and six straight months of cooling inflation, are the dreams of a soft landing close to reality? And has a soft landing already been priced into the markets? Jurrien Timmer unpacks all of this and more today, with host Pamela Ritchie. Denise Chisholm’s sector and factor perspectives – January 17, 2023

Director of Quantitative Market Strategy Denise Chisholm is back on the program sharing her insights and thoughts on what factors are driving the markets and what economic indicators she’s keeping an eye on. Denise says inflation will still be an important topic this year and adds that investors need to be open-minded and that maybe all bad news about inflation is more likely in the rearview for the markets rather than staring us in the face. Denise says she’s finding relative valuation as an important predictor of what works within equities and actually equities overall relative to bonds. She adds parts of the market are deeply overvalued like software and tech, but as an investor, you aggregate those things together with areas of the market that are deeply discounted. She lists the top three sectors as materials and consumer discretionary, financials, and industrials and the bottom three, is consumer staples and utilities, real estate, and tech. Eyes on Europe – Matt Siddle

Today on the show, Matt Siddle, portfolio manager of Fidelity Europe Fund, joins us to discuss the latest market movements in Europe, and where he is finding opportunities in 2023. Matt provides an outlook on the overall European Economy and how he’s positioning his fund based on the latest movements. He says one key item he’s keeping an eye on is natural gas. He says the tailwinds and issues of 2022 are gone as governments are now sourcing gas from other places, however; even with the rise in optimism, he says the economic environment in Europe will be tough in the next six to twelve months. Matt says the mood in Europe has improved, but data indicates the economy is starting to slow - data, job numbers and temporary staffing roles have contributed to the slowing economy. For him, he’s optimistic about the medium outlook for the next three years view however the next six months will be tough. For opportunities right now, Matt is focusing on businesses that are less volatile, less cyclically at risk and have cheap valuations. Recorded on January 13, 2023. Is a tech rebound imminent in 2023? – HyunHo Sohn

Joining us today to discuss how he sees the technology sector panning out in 2023 is HyunHo Sohn, Portfolio Manager of Fidelity Technology Innovators Fund. In December 2022, HyunHo was named Mutual Fund Manager of the Year by Investment Executive https://www.investmentexecutive.com/newspaper_/news-newspaper/a-contrarian-approach-to-markets/ magazine. It was a turbulent year for the tech sector in 2022. Soaring inflation, higher interest rates, and fears of a recession daunted consumers and investors, leading to mass layoffs within large-cap companies, and a market downturn that saw the Nasdaq 100 finish 32% lower on the year. Should investors be more optimistic about a tech bounce back in 2023, and what are some of the macro stories that could help or hinder tech this year? HyunHo answers these questions and more today with host Pamela Ritchie. HyunHo also comments on tech valuations, noting valuations are attractive right now, and his decisions are driven by focusing on company fundamentals with a long-term view. Also, how much are these valuations and fundamentals being controlled by macro variables. A few other topics touched on today include cybersecurity, mergers and acquisitions, and e-commerce trends. Inflation’s impact on global markets in 2023 – Ilan Kolet

Early January’s jobs data out of the U.S. showed a smaller-than-expected increase in wage growth and a soft reading on service-sector activity for the month of December. The data came just days after the release of December’s FOMC minutes, which highlighted that the Fed is on track to keep rates high. But just how high will policy interest rates have to go? How is Fidelity’s Global Asset Allocation team responding to the current economic and monetary policy environment within their multi-asset class funds? To offer his insights on all this and more, we’re joined by Ilan Kolet, Institutional Portfolio Manager. Ilan notes that wage growth remains exceptionally robust in Canada and the U.S. – which leads to higher prices for goods and services passed on to the consumer. They also discuss inflation’s effect on the traditional 60/40 portfolio, with Ilan drawing comparisons between 2022 and the 1970s environment. He shares that commodities do well in the presence of elevated inflation. The Fidelity Inflation-Focused Fund was positioned in commodities throughout 2022. On the topic of positioning, we’ll also get an update from Ilan on the Fidelity Managed Portfolios, which includes some defensive positioning currently. Another key takeaway is Ilan noting that 2023 is an important year to closely follow Central Bank communication. More on this and more coming up. Recorded on January 9, 2023. Today with host Pamela Ritchie, Jurrien touches upon many topics including currency issues, China’s potential reopening, and how emerging markets will fare this year. He says his sense is that 2023 will be a year of frustration both for the bulls and the bears. Why you should consider a long/short strategy – Brett Dley

Portfolio manager Brett Dley joins host Rory Poole to discuss Fidelity Market Neutral Alternative Fund. Brett talks about the diversification benefits that alternative investing brings to the table and why one should consider a long-short strategy. Brett explains the way he invests in this fund is by relative value investing. He doesn’t focus on the direction of the underlying market or asset class, rather he focuses on identifying situations where there are discrepancies between valuations and fundamentals. The aim is to have returns come strictly from stock vs. stock as they don’t have any market or style biases. Furthermore, he focuses on fundamentals and asks “has anything changed? Is my thesis incorrect? If nothing has changed, Brett maintains his conviction. In addition to his investment strategy, Brett discusses his thoughts on long and short positioning in 2023 and underlying themes and trends in health, tech and consumer discretionary. Global Asset Allocation opportunities in 2023 – Ayesha Akbar

Today portfolio manager Ayesha Akbar joins us on the program to share her insights on how to navigate the global markets in 2023. For Canadian investors, Ayesha manages Fidelity Global Asset Allocation Fund. Ayesha says inflation will still be top of mind for many investors this year with energy and food prices the main drivers behind the ongoing inflation story. In terms of asset classes, Ayesha is leaning more toward bonds as she is not ready to put her focus on equities just yet. For her, 2023 is a mixed picture so far and her focus will continue to be on the U.S. Fed’s moves, the labour market in the U.S. and upcoming jobs and employment data. Recorded on January 5, 2023. The big opportunities in small cap investing – Connor Gordon

We’re joined today by Connor Gordon, co-manager of the new Fidelity Global Small Cap Opportunities Fund, which was launched in September 2022 for Canadian investors. The fund may be new to the public, but it builds off the success of an institutional version of the fund, that Connor and Chris Maludzinski have been managing since 2019. Connor shares the funds strategy and the appeal of global small caps with host Pat Bolland today. A key takeaway is that this fund focuses on two types of mispricing targeting both high-quality growth at a reasonable price and value stocks with a catalyst for improvement. Rather than being labeled as a growth or value fund, their style encompasses both. Prior to his portfolio management responsibilities, Connor joined Fidelity in 2009 as a research analyst covering the industrial, tech and healthcare sectors, and managed the corresponding components of the Fidelity Canadian Disciplined Equity Fund. From 2013 to 2019 he was a generalist analyst with responsibilities across all sectors and geographies with a focus on small- and mid-cap securities. Recorded on December 9, 2022.
