In our first episode on emotional repression, we discussed how trauma can cause repressive behaviors and why emotional expression is necessary to living a healthy life. Today, we’re concluding the conversation by addressing two emotions that impedes the healing process: grief and shame. Matt Bush of Next Level Neuro is back to continue the discussion with hosts Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristof. To showcase the effects of grief on the nervous system, they all give examples of client experiences with repressed emotions and their own grief practices. Despite our innate need to express emotions and have connections with other human beings, expressing even positive emotions can be difficult. By the end of this episode, you’ll understand why positive emotions are so threatening to the nervous system and why minimum effective dose may be the key to healing. Why can it be so hard to feel and express emotions? What happens physiologically in the brain and nervous system when anger is stuffed down? Is emotional expression necessary for our physical health? Have these topics been studied, or can we only go off our own experiences? Hosts Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristof, and Matt Bush of Next Level Neuro are answering all these questions and more. They break down the ways people with childhood trauma develop repressive behaviors, why emotional expression is crucial for our overall health, and the consequences of emotional repression in the nervous system. Since repression is a subconscious defense mechanism, it affects our behavior and belief patterns, and changes our perception without us even realizing it. This makes it incredibly hard to change, but after listening to this episode, you’ll better understand how emotional repression impacts the different systems in the body and the power of nervous system regulation. Food is integral to our survival and health, but it’s common for those with trauma to exhibit disordered eating, whether that be a history of dieting, bingeing, or fasting. These behaviors are truly a reflection of our dysregulated nervous system, and only once we start to heal it can we find food freedom. During this episode, we’re talking about the health of our relationships with food and our body, and how nervous system regulation is a path to trauma healing. Jennifer and Elisbeth share their personal experience with distorted eating, and how they achieved food freedom. We also explore the topics of diet culture, intuitive eating, the “good woman narrative,” and how food drives components of complex post-traumatic stress disorder, such as inner critic and perfectionism. “We all know this phrase, ‘if you wanna get out of the hole, stop digging.’ But when you're in complex PTSD, the brain is digging and you can't make it stop. It just keeps going back to these same experiences and these same feelings. It shows up in long-term development of the nervous system. It shows up in the physical body. It shows up because we don't know how to stop the digging.” Today, co-hosts Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristoff of Brain-Based Wellness are again joined by co-founder of the Neuro-Somatic Intelligence Coaching Certification Program, Matt Bush. During the second half of their discussion on complex trauma and the developing brain, you’ll learn why it’s so hard to break the brain’s unhealthy patterns and how you can “stop the digging.” In this episode, Matt explains how the three areas of the brain make a framework to process emotions, regulate emotions, and incite action. has mentioned many times that without integration, long-lasting change is difficult, but without the survival brain and emotional brain working together, integration, specifically vertical integration, is impossible. This may sound overwhelming, but the good news change IS possible because of neuroplasticity. We briefly talked about the death cycle of winter and rebirth in the “Trauma & the Holidays” episode, but today, is addressing how trauma inhibits our ability to rest — which is a crucial element to healing and changing maladaptive behaviors. Hosts Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristoff of Brain-Based Wellness discuss the consequences of poor rest, including derailing the brain’s functioning. Similar to when you’re fatigued and at your full capacity, constantly running on high alert can make us more susceptible to triggers and result in stress responses. Most of us already know that sleep is necessary for our overall health and wellbeing, but letting the mind and body truly rest is also crucial to healing. It’s a common tradition to make resolutions in the New Year, most often relating to our bodies and our habits. New Year’s resolutions usually have an end goal of making us better people, but there’s a reason many people fail to make long-term changes. During today’s episode on core beliefs and resolutions, Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristoff of Brain-Based Wellness explain why it’s not so easy for us to make these grand, albeit positive, changes. They discuss the unrealistic expectations we put on ourselves, as well as the neurology of core beliefs, including how these beliefs drive the behaviors we’re trying to change. You’ll learn why the human body finds change threatening, how you can create safety in change, and what more is needed in order to prepare yourself for change. From last week’s episode on perfectionism to topics like CPTSD elements or intuition, has discussed numerous issues that result from trauma. You’ve heard a lot about the nervous system and how important it is to regulate it, but how exactly do you do that? During this first installment of a three-part series on core beliefs, you’ll learn how to deconstruct the beliefs that drive your harmful behaviors and create a loop of dysregulation. For example, Elisabeth shares her holiday-related anxiety that is leading to trauma responses like perfectionism; and Jennifer helps her trace back these beliefs and rewire the nervous system — just like they would any client. In the spirit of the holiday season, Jennifer and Elisabeth will also be sharing two neuro drills that can bring you to a feeling of safety when in a state of high stress and dysregulation. This will enable you to challenge the beliefs that have a negative impact on your health and healing. “In order to have a thriving world, a thriving ecosystem that works in harmony, we need variance… And yet because we are so far away from our own sense of inherent knowing of our enoughness, we’ve constructed a world where that’s not true for our bodies.” This quote from author Sonya Renee Taylor perfectly puts the discussion on this episode of into context. Joining host Jennifer Wallace to share their perspectives on how systems of oppression live in the body are founders of Neuro Somatic Intelligence, Elisabeth Kristof and Melanie Weller, as well as Victor Jones, a neurosomatic practitioner. Societal, racial, institutional, and ancestral oppression are just a few of these systems that lead to chronic stress and negative consequences for our health. We live in a world with oppressive systems like racism and unrealistic body standards, which festers a sense of unsafety, and results in a dysregulated nervous system, making it difficult to find connection and community. Our society rewards those who work hard, appear to never make mistakes, and seem to have everything under control. We’ve collectively decided on what perfect looks like and attributed perfectionism with the ideal person. What if we told you that perfectionism is actually a protective measure used to prevent oneself from feelings of rejection, abandonment, and worthlessness? These words don’t quite scream “perfect” do they? hosts Jennifer and Elisabeth have touched upon this trauma response before, but today’s episode is a deep dive into how it can develop and lead to harmful avoidance behaviors. They deconstruct perfectionism, including defining the three types of perfectionism and how it interplays with CPTSD elements like the inner critic. You’ll learn the many health consequences that the chronic stress of perfectionism can cause, and how to distinguish excellence from perfectionism. The many gifts received through ceremony with ayahuasca from start to finish cannot be measured within the confines of the days in a retreat. The potential reveals itself during ceremony, but the gifts are found once you’re released into the world again, armed with awareness. However, potential is just that. How do you take that potential and transform it into healing? Integration after ceremony is arguably the most crucial part of the whole process, because this is where you train your body to receive and transmute the heavy dysregulated energy you’ve been carrying in your nervous system your entire life, into regulation. Our host, Jennifer Wallace, recognized this after an extremely eye opening ceremony, that was in fact dysregulating in nature, so she knew there was a lot of work to be done post ceremony. Integrating the new information into her life in order for her body to feel safe was one of the greatest gifts she gave to herself, because now it has helped her create the big life she knew she could live. Jennifer is able to live fully expressed, and if she isn’t, she has the tools to bring her back to that aligned place. Jennifer has learned the tools to integrate the lessons that come up during plant medicine ceremonies and she wants to share her methods with you. Add a powerhouse plant medicine like ayahuasca, which only increases that capacity, and there is the potential for infinite transformation. Humans are a social species, and we crave human connection and intimacy. Even when our nervous system has been severely affected by trauma, we ultimately need to socialize in order to feel fulfilled and meet all of our survival needs. But how does someone living in a chronic state of stress, cycling through the stages of a dysregulated nervous system, balance this need for socialization while also regulating our emotions and behaviors during extreme, instinctual panic? Elisabeth Kristof of Brain-Based Wellness is again joining host Jennifer to discuss social anxiety, the fourth characteristic of CPTSD. You’ll learn what social anxiety is through the filter of trauma, and how it connects with the other components of CPTSD: toxic shame, inner critic, and emotional flashbacks. In this episode, Jennifer and Elisabeth share their personal experiences with social anxiety, including what physiological symptoms they’ve endured and how they dealt with them using both harmful self-soothing behaviors and healthy regulation tools. Tune in for a deeper understanding of how social anxiety and the other components of CPTSD interconnect, and free resources to help you find the balance between self-care and socializing! In the first short episode detailing Jennifer’s ayahuasca experience, she shared her intentions for healing. In this next installment, you’ll hear her firsthand account of how she, with help from two shamans, was able to retrieve her soul and restore a feeling of safety. After drinking the ayahuasca tea and being enveloped in the impassioned sounds of Maestros Maricella and Francisco singing icaros, Jennifer was able to find parts of her that were lost through her life’s trauma. Jennifer describes being back in the maloka for a second night, once again feeling connected to the universe through vibrant visions of herself and nature. The magic of the ayahuasca medicine, combined with the progress made on the first night, allowed her to process deeper emotions and finally reach a place of self-love.
